Who this trip is for

People who have four days on Phu Quoc and do not want to spend them on a sun lounger or in the An Thoi islands. It suits travellers who have been to Vietnam before and want a slower island version, and it suits first-timers who would rather understand one place than tick five.

It is not a comprehensive tour of Phu Quoc. There is no snorkelling, no cable car, no safari park, no Sunset Town and no national park trek. Those things exist, some of them are good, and they are not what this is. If you want a mixed island week, book two or three of our days and fill the rest yourself - the how many days page sets out how to do that.

You sleep three nights: two in your own hotel wherever you have booked it, and the third in the family house at Cua Can. We do not sell you hotel nights you could book better yourself, and that keeps the price honest and comparable.

The four days

Day one finishes at eleven in the morning and day two starts at eight, which gives you a free afternoon and evening on day one to sleep or go to the beach. That is deliberate. Four consecutive full days here defeats most people and the fourth becomes wasted money.

Day by day

Day 1

Ham Ninh at dawn, then your own afternoon

The first boats at 05:50, with nobody else on the ramp

Collected between 04:40 and 05:10 for the east coast. The boats come in between five thirty and seven, the catch is graded on the ramp and sold, and breakfast is at the crab kitchen behind the pier at seven.

After breakfast we walk the village lanes while it is still working - net repair, the drying racks, the temple - and leave at about nine fifteen as it goes quiet. Coffee at a roadside stall on the way back and you are at your hotel by half past eleven with the entire afternoon free.

Day 2

Pepper, fish sauce, and the streets after dark

A full day inland: two hours and a quarter at the pepper farm at Khu Tuong with the owner, lunch cooked by the family in the garden, then the fish sauce house on the Duong Dong outskirts and the anchovy shore on the Ham Ninh road.

Back at your hotel by half past four with two hours to shower and change, then the food walk from half past five: seven dishes, six kitchens, ending on the harbour front with squid on the charcoal and the night boats casting off. This is the long day of the trip and it is worth the length.

Day 3

The back roads, then into the village

The east coast dirt at three, with nobody on it

Bikes at eight in Duong Dong, ridden or pillion, and about 85 kilometres north and east of which 45 are red dirt. Lunch in a hamlet on the Bai Thom road, the east coast dirt in the afternoon, and instead of returning to your hotel we finish at Cua Can at about four.

The rest of day three is the homestay: your room, an hour to yourself, the crab traps at the river mouth at four thirty, dinner with the family at half past six and the evening afterwards. Your bag comes across in the support vehicle so you are not carrying anything on the bike.

Day 4

The Cua Can boats, and cooking what they landed

Cooking with what you watched land two hours earlier

Awake early whether you meant to be, and down to the shore at half past five for the boats landing on the sand. Breakfast at half past seven, then an hour in the garden with the grandmother.

The last morning is the kitchen: four dishes cooked at the family rings from what came in - herring salad, clay pot fish with caramel, sour soup and banh xeo - eaten at their table at about half past twelve. We drop you back at your hotel or the airport by half past one, and we send the written recipes by email that evening.

Booked separately, the four component days cost USD 39 + 55 + 32 + 62 + 148 = USD 336 at the six to eight person rate, so the four-day price carries about USD 59 of sequencing, bag handling between the bike day and the homestay, and the guarantee that the same guide is with you for all four days. Who this trip is not for

• Anyone who wants a beach holiday with some culture attached. There is one free afternoon in four days and the rest is early starts.
• Travellers who need a comfortable bed every night. Night three is a fan room with a shared bathroom and a rooster.
• People coming between June and September. The bike day does not run and without it this becomes a three-day trip, which we would rather sell you as three days.
• Groups with children under six. Two of the four days start before half past five.
• Anyone who wants the famous things: the cable car, the safari, the islands, Sunset Town. None of them are on this itinerary and we are not going to add them.
